How Valuable Is A Builder's Checklist?

I can tell you exactly how valuable a builder's checklist is, I wouldn’t build a house without one. I've worked on so many homes and seen so many mistakes, simply because someone wasn't paying attention. I'm not talking about amateur home builders, I'm talking about professional home builders who have been building homes for over 25 years.

I worked with a guy who had 45 years experience in construction and had been a licensed general contractor for over 30 years. I watched this man make more mistakes in one day, then most people made in a week. He surrounded himself with experts that often corrected his mistakes and made him look good. Believe it or not, I was one of those people that he valued. I saved him more money than he ever paid me. That might be a little far-fetched, but I definitely saved his bottom, more than once.

You could probably find a builder's checklist at your local library or bookstore and possibly even on the Internet. I created my own builder's checklist a long time ago and add to it regularly. I am constantly perfecting my builder's checklist and will continue to do so, until the day I die.

A builder's checklist should have everything that you would need to build a home, in it. Sometimes people tell you that you shouldn't get carried away, but that isn't the case here. Anything that you could possibly think of should be on that list. Items like foundation vents, dryer vents, toilet supply valves, hot water heater, dormer vents etc.

Yes, the builder's checklist is extremely important and I wouldn't do any building without one. I created my own and you can also. I add new items to my list regularly, as people share stories with me about items they forgot or had problems with, while building or remodeling homes.
